I have Internet Explorer 10 installed and anytime I click on an email address link mailtoI receive an error saying the mail client isn't configured properly and when I click OK to close that message it's like tornado of IE windows that open. My mail client is properly configured and mailto is set for my mail program. I did not have this problem prior to IE 10 which I need for some SharePoint functionality but the only resolution I've found is to go back to IE 9, which isn't a resolution for me.
This guy's blog has a video - start at about 48 seconds to see what happens. If the above does not help, follow these steps: Re-create the missing string value Click Start, Run and type Regedit. From the Edit menu, select New, and then click String Value. I haven't seen this with IE 10 and uninstalling seems hardly like a fix, but each to their own.
Or compatibility mode? Have you tried any of these? What specifically is your mail client? Does MailTo work in Windows Explorer if you right-click a file to send as an attachment?
At this point, I avoid clicking on email address links in IE but I'll keep looking for a solution and post back if I find one. BSOD'D - the registry fix did it! This must be an omission with the IE 10 installer somewhere. It didn't happen with some users, and don't know why. There must be some reason some people had this value already such windows 10 mailto not working free download myself and others didn't.

Internet Explorer 11 is doing this same thing. It crashes the OS - one has no choice but to reboot - no way to recover a darn thing.

Even more so because it was making me look bad in front of a coworker who had the issue and requested my department to fix it. In addition to setting the Program Defaults and Access setting you may also need to open the browsers Internet Options IE 11 for me settings, then turn off the "E-Mail with Windows Live" Accelerator which is located in the Manage Add-Ons section under the Accelerators tab see picture below.
I followed all the other suggestions and even started digging into the registry with no luck. I could make it work as local administrator but not when the user signed in with their domain authorized account.
